Located within Criffel Station, Wānaka, Dusk Hedges is a specialist nursery growing beautiful, strong plants to instantly enhance your landscape. Our mature hedges are grown to thrive in the unique Central Otago climate. Choose from our existing stock available in various heights – some of which are shown below – or we can work with you to plant a custom order for the future. Prunus Lusitanica Portuguese Laurel

A broad-spreading tree, this is a popular screening and hedging option. With glossy dark leaves and cream flowers in spring, followed by blackberries, it can be trimmed to topiary standards or left to grow wild and beautiful. Note, berries are poisonous to animals.

Benefits:

Visual appeal.
Evergreen.
Cold and drought hardy.
Can grow to 12m.

Conditions:

Dry or moist soils.
Full sun/ partial shade.

Photinia ‘Red Robin’

Featuring bright red growth tips and small white flowers, this hedging plant brings colour to your garden in Spring. A New Zealand-bred cultivar, it is a reliable hedging plant.

Benefits:

Strong and tolerant of most conditions – brings colour and native wildlife to your garden.

Conditions:

Prefers well-drained soil
Full sun or partial shade
Hardy.

Pittosporum Tenuifolium

A versatile native evergreen with dense, attractive foliage and fragrant dark flowers. Tough, fast-growing and frost-hardy, kōhūhū brings year-round structure and texture while also supporting local biodiversity.

Benefits:

Grows up to 8m
Prunes and shapes well
Wind, frost and dry tolerant

Conditions:

Full sun or partial shade
Prefers free-draining soil

Griselinia Littoralis

A popular shrub for hedging, Griselinia features large, glossy leathery green leaves. Easily trimmed to form a strong hedge, this plant offers excellent shelter.

Mature trees can reach 10m+ on sheltered sites. Evergreen. Hardy.

Benefits:

The hedges can withstand drought and strong winds and the berries will help attract native birdlife and insects.

Conditions:

Dry and moist soils (hardy).
Prefers full sun or partial shade.

Elaeagnus x Ebbingei

Fast growing and dense, these glossy, dark-green leaves form a fantastic hedge.

Benefits:

Trims well or low shelter under trees.
Fixes nitrogen.
Very hardy.

Conditions:

Wind and cold tolerant.
Full sun/partial shade.
